Zechariah 8 vs 5 ~ "And the streets of the city (Jerusalem) shall be filled, with boys and girls playing in its streets."
Young boys enjoying their ball games in the Jewish quarter of the Old City, Jerusalem, fulfilling the prophecy of the prophet Zechariah – their kippahs, flailing tassels (Tzitzit) and sidelocks (Payot) highlight their strong culture, which is wonderful.
Street photography can be difficult, as composition and subject matter require collaboration to tell a story. The three elements that make up the composition in this image don’t interfere with each other and the diagonal line through the stone paving leads the eye to the ball. The boy in the black and white stripes, seemingly suspended in action and the two who are entering the frame at right, are what I feel that make this image a keeper. I spent three afternoons with these kids and managed this one image which I feel illustrates young Jewish recreational time in their historic homeland.
