Young boys enjoying their ball games in the Jewish quarter of the Old City, Jerusalem, fulfilling the prophecy of the prophet Zechariah – their kippahs, flailing tassels (Tzitzit) and sidelocks (Payot) highlight their strong culture, which is wonderful.
Street photography can be difficult, as composition and subject matter require collaboration to tell a story. The three elements that make up the composition in this image don’t interfere with each other and the diagonal line through the stone paving leads the eye to the ball. The boy in the black and white stripes, seemingly suspended in action and the two who are entering the frame at right, are what I feel that make this image a keeper. I spent three afternoons with these kids and managed this one image which I feel illustrates young Jewish recreational time in their historic homeland.IsraelTemple MountJerusalemJudaismGrant LevershaOld CityJewish QuarterZechariah 8 vs 5
Senior Citizen: Carmel Market, Tel Aviv
While Israel is doing its best to accommodate the elderly, there are some who find surviving from day to day a struggle. With ageing, health problems and diminished strength begin to take their toll. I photographed this senior citizen in the Carmel Market making his way as the stalls were closing. Black & white, I feel, works more effectively for this image as it eliminates the busyness of colour. The look and feel projects a timeless appeal and perhaps, in some way, arouses emotions of austerity and the highlights the stern challenges facing the aged.
“When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black & white, you photograph their souls!” — Ted Grant
